With its tax and duty free environment being a welcome respite for cost conscious buyers, Dubai has a lot to offer for those interested in electronic goods. The malls and shopping centers remain stocked with various electronic items and everyone from the casual shopper to the interested buyers cannot help being attracted by the bargains. But then again, a single decision made in a moment of passion can result in a bitter lesson as one is left to budget and scrounge on other items once the item has been paid for or has to be paid for. Taxes and duties in one’s home country also need to be considered when one is eventually moving out of Dubai or returning there from a short holiday like in the Dubai Shopping Festival.
The DSF is an event where various bargains and discounts are available on a variety of items and electronics is one area that figures prominently in such a scenario. Retailers in turn are similarly encouraged by the healthy customer response to the available bargains. Analysts have noted that in the first 15 days of the recent DSF, there has been an improvement of as much as 30 per cent over the sales of last year.
It was seen that the demand for luxury and high-priced goods like LED televisions, air conditioners, washing machines and fridges is yet to show signs of recovery. However, it could not help being noticed that because of economic considerations, the average consumer's interest has shifted from big sized appliances to smaller size economy class gadgets. Consequently there has been a shift in purchasing patterns from luxuries to necessities. It is thus evident that the global economic meltdown has severely impacted the purchasing power of consumers.
